Nanjing Road is the main shopping street of Shanghai, China, one of the world's busiest shopping streets.
Orientation
Nanjing Road is located in the city center, running in a west-east direction. Its eastern section (南京东路)is in Huangpu District and extends from The Bund (Wai Tan-外滩) west to People's Square. The western section (南京西路) begins at People's Square and continues westward towards Jing'an District. This section is known for its luxurious shopping centers.
History
East Nanjing Road is now reserved for pedestrians after having been redesigned by a French architect.
Events
Tourists and guests often celebrate various holidays at Nanjing Road, such as the Chinese New Year, the Spring break, New Year's Eve, Christmas and Easter. Some parts of the buildings and shopping malls seen in front of the Nanjing Road today may host a fireworks display over the main isle of the street.
Tourist warning
At Nanjing road there are many men and women who will try to persuade you to come with them and patronize a local coffee shop. For men, they often offer female companionship with promises to provide sexual services and karoake companionship. However, this is a trap. There are also many people who will try to convince you to come with them to get "special massages" - again, sexually oriented propositions. Other scams involve invitations to a tea zeremony (the so-called Tea-house scam) or visiting art galleries, often offered by alleged 'students from Beijing'. It can be difficult to avoid these people as they often wait in front of hotels to lure unsuspecting tourists. Often, asking to take their picture will cause them to leave you alone. Another deterrent is to travel in a group, as they tend to favor lone travelers as targets.
Transportation
Shanghai Metro Line 2 runs along Nanjing Road, including three stations:
* Nanjing Road (E.) (formerly Henan Zhong Road), closest station to the pedestrianised part of East Nanjing Road and The Bund
* Nanjing Road (W.) (formerly Shimen No. 1 Road), at the beginning of the western section of the street, close to People's Square.
* Jing'an Temple, in the farther western section of Nanjing Road. |
